Listen up campers! From November 11th to 18th, the book fair was up! This year, the theme was camping. The biannual school book fair was held on the second floor and the book fair committee went all out for the decorations, cutting out many shapes and sizes, from paper animals and leaves to a camper and a campfire.
Debbie Lindh, the longest-serving member of the book fair committee, has been on the committee for nine years, and since the book fair happens twice a year, this was her 18th book fair. Her favorite part of the book fair is “Seeing the kids walk up after we put the decorations up and seeing their excited faces.”
Kids always have a blast at the V.I.P. breakfast. This tradition is open to all students in preschool through third grade. The kids bring in a loved one for breakfast. This year, the breakfast consisted of donuts, apple juice, water, or orange juice, and a variety of fruits. Since grades four through eight don’t get to go to the breakfast, they get donuts brought up to their classrooms. Another part of the tradition is making a craft. This year, the craft was to make binoculars out of toilet paper rolls and washi tape. There was also a backdrop for the kids and their V.I.Ps to take pictures in front of, making it look like they were roasting marshmallows at their very own campfire.
Then there’s the after-school shopping. Open to parishioners and students alike, the book fair sells journals and pens alongside newly released novels. According to Lindh, the most popular book this year was “The Guinness Book of World Records and Taylor Swift.” The Guinness Book of World Records is the most popular book almost every year. The most popular item, as Lindh put it, was “stackable gummy bear erasers. Actually, it was those classroom pointers. We sold a whole box of them.” She also said, “We didn’t sell many posters this year, which was the first time in a long time.”
