Holy Redeemer Tradition: 7th Grade Luke 18 Retreat

Molly and Thomas Berra are the Youth Ministers here at Holy Redeemer. Molly and Thomas began youth ministry at HR in August 2023. The two of them host an annual retreat for the 7th grade class called Luke 18.

According to them, there are 28 student helpers for Luke 18 this year, and they are feeling very excited about this upcoming year and the retreat. Molly Berra says, “I plan to give them opportunities to encounter God’s love in a different way.” In their opinion, their favorite part of Luke 18 is the interaction and bond that the “Lukers” (retreatants)  will get with their small group, and they enjoy playing all the games with the Lukers too.

Molly says she has led five Luke 18 retreats in the past. However, Molly and Thomas have both been working in the youth ministry for 5 years and have volunteered for 10. Molly and Thomas definitely take a big role in our youth ministry here at Holy Redeemer and without them, our students here wouldn’t have as deep of a relationship with God.

“Luke 18 is a parish-based community for children. Its name comes from the passage of Luke 18: 16- 17 which reads, ‘And Jesus said to them: Let the children come to me and do not prevent them because the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.’ Luke 18 happens every year sometime in October for one weekend, for the 7th graders. During this fun weekend, you become closer to your classmates and closer to God. You do activities that increase your trust in God and with your class, but you also spend time in deep prayer and thought, praying to God.” -Molly Berra
