On Monday, September 30, the pet blessing took place at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. The pet blessing is where you bring your pets to get them blessed by a priest. By having pets of all kinds blessed, you can witness God’s grace come down from Heaven. Not everyone comes with their pet, and it isn’t required that you have to bring one, but you can’t go wrong with bringing a cute animal in to be blessed.
“It’s like Noah’s Ark on steroids,” says Father Kevin when talking about the pet blessing. That statement is very true, seeing as many families came with their dogs, or in a few other peoples’ scenarios, cats. Father Kevin was then later asked what he likes to bless more, cats or dogs. In response, he said, “I love all God’s creatures,” yet he later admitted to be more of a cat person. He said that out in the country, people would sometimes bring bunnies, ducks, iguanas, and other pets that you usually wouldn’t think would come to this event.
Father Kevin wasn’t the only priest here, however. Father Samson came and talked to families while petting the animals that they brought. The pets loved to jump up on him when he crouched down, which triggered lots of laughs and smiles.
The pet blessing finally ended with a prayer and, of course, a blessing, that Father Kevin delivered to everyone there. He then went around with holy water and would ask what the name of each pet was. At that point, children had begun to run off to play on the playground with their friends, and the pet blessing came to a close.
